Tuning In: Finding God’s Frequency in the Static
So much of our lives depend on frequency waves. From our phones, to GPS, to our bluetooth headphones, we rely on those frequencies to get though our day. And those frequencies are very sensitive to many things we cannot control. Extreme hot or cold temps, solar flares, rain, snow - even wind, can all effect how well we get a signal.
One minute you're telling your bestie a crazy story and the next—static.
Sometimes, life feels like that: a bunch of scrambled frequencies competing for your attention. Fear has its own station. Doubt blares like an obnoxious infomercial. Distraction is on every channel, and somehow always louder than everything else.
But what if there’s a frequency that cuts through it all? One that doesn’t drop out or crackle or loop the same worry over and over?
Pastor Jay taught last Sunday from Philippians, explaining how prayer is the process by which we tune out the frequency of the world and tune in to the frequency of heaven.
It reminded me of Psalm 56—David's journey of trying to find that signal—God’s voice—in the middle of chaos.
At the time, David was being hunted down, trapped in Gath, and definitely not living his best life. He’s surrounded by noise—the real kind and the soul kind.
As you read each stanza of the Psalm you can see David trying to tune in.
“They’re after me!” (vs 1-2)
“But I can trust in God” (vs 3-4)
“Hey, those scheming, wicked enemies are really after me!” (vs 5-7)
“You see my tears, God. I know you’ve got me.” (Vs 9)
That’s David adjusting the dial - riding the waves. He doesn’t deny the fear—he names it, then chooses what frequency to focus on.
Verse by verse, you can feel the shift. He’s recalibrating, tuning his heart.
And then—the signal begins to clear:
“This I know, God is for me.” (Psalm 56:9)
CLICK. He finds it. That clear signal.
He now can say,
"I trust in God. I praise his word.
I trust in the Lord. I praise his word.
I trust in God. I am not afraid.
What can mere people do to me?"
(vs 10-13)
He is making a declaration. Telling his soul and telling the world. “I WILL PRAISE AND TRUST IN GOD!”
By repeating these truths he “put into practice” the faith that would bring him into “excellent harmony” with God. (Phil 4:8-9)
He is connected, finally, to the frequency he’d been searching for. His problems hadn’t disappeared but their static was no longer what he heard.
“God is for me and I can trust Him”
Relief. Connection. Clarity.
David’s circumstances hadn’t changed—but his signal strength had.
He chose to listen to the Voice of truth over the noise of fear.
Even as David navigated those waves, trying to tune in, he knew to keep dwelling on God because what he dwelled on ultimately would be the frequency he tuned in to.
Tuning In:
• What voices are the loudest in your life right now?
• How can you make space to tune into God’s voice today?
• What truths from Scripture help you filter through fear?
__________
Tuning in can take practice, even repetition. Prayers from the Psalms, the Lord’s Prayer, or ancient prayers from faithful followers centuries ago can help us tune in to God’s frequency - giving us a connection that will bring peace and harmony to our soul.
